So when are you doing enough?
An IRONMAN athlete, who I have been coaching for some time messaged me to say, "I feel really strong and I am not injured."... Wait for it... "but I think I could more. I look at what my friend (they are not really her friend!) is doing on Strava and they are doing way more than me."
"Should I be doing more?" and "Am I doing enough?"
"I mean, I know I beat her at the last race."
This is actually quite a common theme in Triathletes. More is better. Go hard all the time. I have seen such and such on Strava... blah blah blah.
Here is a little gem of advice for any IRONMAN athlete...
That 'friend' is not you!
Doing Enough Point one.
They don't have the same job as you. They don't have the same family commitments you do. And they sure as Jose Cerveza don't have the same body as you.
Doing Enough Point two.
You still have some tough training to do and in the weeks and months we will maximise the time you have available. Blimey we still have 3 months until the big race! Rest assured you will be ready.
I guess, this is where a coach comes into their own... they make an athlete accountable... but they are also the voice of reason.
Its no good being king of the club run in February if the big race is in July. Put simply, no point peaking too soon.
We are working through an plan for you... not your friend's plan.
Doing Enough Point three.
You kicked her arse at the last race, so it would appear our plan is working...
Doing Enough Point four.
My coaching philosophy is Consistent, Sustainable and Balanced training. Never more applicable than leading into an IRONMAN race. You have been training consistently, are not injured, are performing excellently and we still have three months to go... perfect!
Philosophy: Consistent, Sustainable and Balanced
So you want to do a bit more. Let's work on some of the other aspects of your training... all just as important:
- Sleep
- Relaxation techniques
- Recovery techniques
- Mental strength
- Nutrition
- Strength & conditioning
Stop stressing about whether or not you are doing enough. That is my job. More is not always better... infact... it is a slippery slope to the whole thing coming apart.
You are doing enough.
